Some Things I Learned This Week

Most people are smart enough to know not to shoot someone. But these same people still smoke around others (even though 2nd hand smoke has been proven to increase your risk of cancer).

Most people still drive their cars, even though it has been proven the CO2 levels in the atmosphere can cause global warming which could eventually lead to extinction.

Not very many people read my blog. When I post similar things on NBC news stories, lots and lots of people call me an idiot.

Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born on the exact same day. They were both Aquarius. February 12, 1809. They both died in April. Darwin, April 19, 1882. Lincoln, April 15, 1865. Of course one died more violently than the other.

Darwin did not come up with the idea of evolution. He simply did the research and the publications. He wrote it down. Jean Baptiste de Lamarck had the idea. He was more of a philosopher though so it wasn't taken too seriously. He didn't do the leg work. Besides Lamarckism doesn't sound as cool as Darwinism.

Good actors and actresses are the ones that you like, but you don't recognize. Gary Oldman has kept me ignorant for a long time and I've watched several movies, where he plays a main role, several times. I've watched Prisoner of Azkaban more times than I like to admit. I've watched Batman Begins at least 3 times. I never knew.

There is no way I could have written this any better :).

What a moron. It took Dee Snider to shoot his wife down. Someone must do the same for him...

Laws, Laws, Laws and More Laws

The lawyers get richer, the people get poorer. Why do we need so many laws?

A long while ago I blogged about my new political party: The KISS Party.

The KISS acronym even has a Wiki page thus saving me the trouble of discussing it at length.

In Texas, they are trying to ban smoking in public places. I have friends that smoke. One of my best friends smokes more than I breathe. I don't really mind being in smoking places. I'm slightly allergic and I don't like it being blown in my face, but for the most part it doesn't bother me. My wife is a "follow the crowd" smoker. She can go for months without smoking and then go out with her friends and go through a pack because everyone else is.

According to my KISS Party Principle, we only need one law. Don't do anything that will hurt someone else. With that one law, people shouldn't smoke in public.

We don't need the law, just the penalty. What should be the penalty for giving others a higher incidence of lung cancer?

Now, they are trying to pass a law to ban cell phones while driving. It makes me crazy when I see someone talking on the phone while they drive. However, it still falls under the rule: Don't do anything that will hurt someone else. We don't need another law. I don't care why someone is driving recklessly. If they are driving recklessly because they are playing with their stereo, yelling at their kids, or talking on the phone, they should be pulled over and fined appropriately. We don't need specialized laws.

When you stand back and look at it, we are allowing the law makers to do some pretty scary stuff. They ban certain types of guns because of their "danger" potential. They ban certain drugs because drugs create crime. If we continue to try and prevent crime before it happens pretty soon they'll just genetically test all babies to see if they have the "criminal gene". Babies with the criminal gene are illegal.

Coaches, Teachers and Kids

I heard about this story today. Basically, a "beloved" football coach in Kentucky is being charged with reckless homicide because one of the players died during practice.

I don't know what you think of things like this, but my mind went elsewhere as usual.

I think we all know that I hate the current mixture of sports (particularly football) with our schools. Football has nothing to do with education and yet the coaches probably make a lot more than the math teachers. I had a football coach in Junior High try to explain to his history class why a pound of lead weighs more than a pound of gold or maybe vice versa (I'm shady on the details).

Anyway, there should be some general rule against taking advantage of someone with an immature mind. You can go do a search on the Internet and see all the teachers that have been charged with sex crimes against their "underage" students. Lots of women teachers have spent years in jail for having sex with students.

I personally, don't see the difference. If you are going to charge teachers with taking advantage of a student sexually, then teachers, that, through brainwashing, encourage athletes to overexert themselves to the point of dying, should also be charged. If I were 15, I'd rather be brainwashed into having sex with a teacher than be brainwashed into thinking if I drank water or took a break I'd be a pussy; causing me to die of heat stroke.

Interesting Presidental Statistics for Today

Occasionally, I discover something and it creates a flood of questions in my dangerously curious little head.

Last week, I was watching Obama sign something and was surprised to discover he was left handed. I get along quite well with most left handed people I meet. I think it's because I'm left handed too and my dad was left handed.

So, anyway, I made the comment that if Obama was an Aquarius, he'd be perfect. I'm a left-handed Aquarius. We are all perfect.

But, alas, Barack Obama was born August 4th which makes him a Leo. It's still not bad, just not perfect. In viewing people over the years, I've discovered which people I tend to like and which people I tend to dislike. It sounds frightening and it is, but I don't care. Normally, Cancers are difficult for me to tolerate. George Bush was a Cancer (in more ways than one). So, a left handed Leo should be much better than a right handed Cancer.

Durango is a Leo which is probably one of the reasons he likes Obama so much. I don't think he's left handed though. My brother is a Leo and I get along with him quite swimmingly. I used to get along with Durango before he abandoned me.

George was the first right handed president since 1980. Clinton was left handed, George's dad was left handed and Reagan was left handed. The amazing thing about Reagan is he was a left handed Aquarius. He was also a distant cousin of mine. My grandmother on my mom's side was a Reagan before she got married. I think Ron was a 5th or 6th cousin of mine. Carter was right handed. Gerald Ford was left handed.

Learning This Week

I started trying to read some educational books in the last two weeks. I normally stick to "brain candy" type fantasy sci-fi. But, as of the new year I ordered some history books to see if I could learn something new. I do spend some amount of time reading technical books, but you don't want to hear about that. Let's just say that someday I think I might write a book about encapsulation.

I'm reading "Columbia History of the World" as my first try. I've got some books that a fellow blogger recommended coming from Amazon.

Anyway, this History of the World book is a hardback and almost 1200 pages. I found it at Half-Price books for $8 which seems to be a pretty good deal. The cheapest I could find it on the Internet was $12. I've read the first chapter and a half. It starts out with the beginnings of the universe with a discussion on mass, gravity, helium, hydrogen, etc. It's very interesting. Next chapter starts getting into the beginnings of the earth and then how the continents were formed and how life began (I'm not quite through the second chapter). I've got a long way to go. It was published in 1972. I can't help but wonder how many of the theories they talk about have been updated since then. Is the Atlantic Ocean really expanding by two inches every year?

This week I learned that the word failing doesn't necessarily relate to grades.

I also learned yesterday that Obama is left handed. Being a south paw myself, his status in my eyes went up by 2 points. If only he were an Aquarius.

Alliterator Animal Sh*t List: The Letter 'G'

I bet you thought/hoped I forgot about this, but I did not!

It's becoming more difficult to remember where I left off. I think it's because of some kind of old age thing.

But, the G's are one of my favorites. Of course, I think each time someone does this list, a new adjective or two gets added to the G list.

Trustworthiness and Politicians

I was listening to the radio again this morning on the way to work and apparently these guys at Princeton have discovered that humans see people as trustworthy based on facial features (don't know how long that link will last). When you are walking down the street certain people appear trustworthy while others do not.

I decided to take it a step further. Here's the picture from the Princeton article.
If you can't tell by looking the one on the left is the "trustworthy" face. The right one is not, the center one is neutral.

Here's some famous people who were recent Presidents.
I'm seeing lots of neutrality there. Both have the eyebrows that are even or maybe a little raised coming to the inner face. Here's a famous person that was not elected.
He's definitely leaning towards the not trustworthy side. Here's to genetics. Or maybe we could save a lot of money during the next election. The guys at Princeton say we make these decisions in less than a second.

The Worst Part of the Speech

Obama is a good speaker. I think everyone agrees on that. I read an article about his speech yesterday and it was all going pretty good until one part.

He said, "our schools fail too many". Now, on the one hand I agree with this. But it's like saying "too many people are not millionaires". I also agree with this, but it's not the problem.

He would have been better off saying, "our school systems are not properly educating our children". Yes, too many are failing, but the ones that are passing are not getting a challenging, well rounded education. He, like his predecessor, is ignoring the gifted. It sounds like he's going to go with the "no child left behind" policy that I hate, although it could be part of a great policy. Just not the mantra of the policy.

Our education system can not be fixed by making sure everyone passes. On the radio today, a guy was saying how he makes money every six weeks by hacking into the school's computer and raising grades so athletes and other students don't fail. I guess he should be part of Obama's board of education. Sounds like he's got a plan for Obama's grand scheme that will actually make money rather than costing money.

Fly On The Wall Syndrome

All my life I've had this desire to observe people without being observed. I think when I turned 30, I decided it was time to let my light shine (so people would notice me of course).

But, occasionally, I still go back to my old ways. I've discovered other people's blogs are wonderful for doing this. You are basically getting to witness a new level of social interaction. And, what's more, if you look hard enough, you can find social interaction from all over the world.

I've been watching Americans, and mostly Texans, for over 30 years now. Suddenly with blogs, and the resulting dialog, I can "virtually" watch other people from other countries. It's simply amazing that we are all humans on this planet and are all strongly influenced by our individual upbringing and circumstances.

A while ago I blogged about a blog from Singapore that I've been reading. Last week, he blogged about how other bloggers are taking the wrong angle looking at a citizen who set a member of parliament on fire. It's better if you read it here, but I'll summarize for the lazy or those induced by advertisements. An old 70 year old guy set this government official on fire and is being praised as a hero of sorts. Ghost's take is that the guy should be punished (which I agree with). Violence begets violence and all. Other bloggers in that area don't necessarily share this opinion.

Anyway, the amazing part is that it's got over 50 comments so far. And although all these people are saying various things and having a heated argument. They are all voicing their opinions in a coherent way. It's inteligent people having an inteligent conversation. I tried to join in, but as an American, I don't think you can fully understand the circumstances.

Then if got me to thinking about my ongoing dilemma of removing power from money and can it be done? Well, apparently this old man thought that he could remove someone's power by setting them on fire. Is violence the only way to remove power from the wealthy?

Age of Conan: Post Merge

I usually shy away from posting crap like this because I figure (and probably correctly) that the majority of people don't care.

However, I think Funcom has proven that in the time of MMO games, server population is very important.

A while ago, I posted about the impending merge.

They finally did the merge last week. I don't even feel like going back to see how many servers there were before the merge, but they reduced it significantly. Let's say it went from 12 US servers to 6.

For the MMO ignorant who have made it past the first paragraph, when you make a "virtual" character to play with, you can pick which server to play on. You can't interact with characters outside of your server. I don't particularly like this setup either, but that's the way things currently are. So, if a server is desolate, you end up paying $15/month to play an MMO by yourself.

After the Age of Conan merge, all kinds of content has opened up. Yesterday I was finally able to go through, what they call, "The Amphitheatre of Karutonia". The end result is rescuing a frost giant type thing from captivity. It was a lot of fun.

Anyway, I'll be blogging less and playing more or blogging more and playing more (mwahahahaaa)!

Amerika

I had a friend who once complained about the Germans. I think he has Dutch heritage. A German friend of mine once told me that all the Dutch hate Germans. Has something to do with wars and well, I don't remember all of it. It's why they ride old bicycles in The Netherlands.

I don't agree with him (Durango) all the time, but he's a smart fellow, and I like listening to him. By reading his blog, I have learned many things.

Anyway, when I saw this video, it reminded me of some of his strange opinions towards people on the other side of the big pond. It's funny. Enjoy.

Oh To Be Educated

I've been wanting to write something up about education for a long time. But, I have so much to say I was afraid it would turn into a book instead of a blog. I doubt my book would be any more well read than my blog. Was that proper English?

My education pretty much sucked. I mean, I made straight A's in school. I was valedictorian of my class of 20. I was barely in the top 10%.

But, overall, it was not challenging. I remember taking Algebra my freshman year in high school with a bunch of football playing cheer leading seniors who had no interest in learning anything.

So, instead of giving you a bitter history of my many irritations (like the state forcing me to take two semesters of foreign languages and my school only offering Spanish I and Spanish II). I will try to point out possible solutions.

But, I can't do it all in one blog. I must tease my reader.

The first thing we should do to fix our lame education system in this country is to have two paths after the 5th grade.

After you get out of the 5th grade, there should be enough grade history there to know whether you are going to be a brain or a football star. The brains go to the learning school. The football stars go to the "no-pass no-play" school (the current school system).

Of course, there will have to be ways to alter your path. Some people in the football school might be smart enough to be in the brainy school. There might be a brainy person that can play football. But, I really don't want to get into football or sports. So, I will quit using that funny analogy.

People that get put in the challenging school (brainy) will have to maintain their brainy attitude.

People that get put in the challenged school (slow) will have to maintain their inability to learn or be educated.

Actually, it sounds bad, but the people in the challenged (slow) school will get the same education that everyone gets today. So, the challenging (brainy) school will be a huge improvement to the education of the USA.

Alliterator Animal Sh*t List: The Letter 'F'

Today, on the radio, they were having listeners call in to finish this sentence, "I wish I could have all the time back in my life that I spent ..."

And now for the Letter F!

Freshly Fermented Fish Fecal Farts

I couldn't find a really good picture. There was one that looked close, but it was a whale (not technically a fish). So, you get this cartoon instead.

Ann Coulter and the People That Hate Her

Today I was listening to the radio on the way to work and there was an interesting lady promoting her new book. It was Ann Coulter talking about her new book, Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America.

Now I'll never read this book. Strongly opinionated books like this one tend to do something to my blood pressure that's not fun.

However, I think Ann is behaving in an outrageous fashion for the media attention and she gets lots of it. If you don't listen to her raving and instead listen to what she's saying, it makes some sense. She's probably a very smart woman who knows how to get media attention. She could say what she's trying to say in a politically correct fashion and people would be saying, "Ah, that makes sense." But then no one would hear about her new book because her media appearances would be dull. I think I'm going somewhere with this.

For example, today she started spewing off factoids about how single moms are bad. Basically, they can't raise children and there is lots of evidence to prove it. I don't remember the exact data she spouted off, but it basically amounted to the fact that children brought up by single mothers tend to be less contributing members of society. In fact, according to her, in lots of cases, they tend to be detrimental to society. They don't get the same upbringing. They don't get the same chances, etc.

It all may be true. I didn't do any research. But the way she presents it just immediately makes everyone mad and stupid. One of the DJ's on today's program said that she was skewing the results because she said that if you drink orange juice you are getting 200% of your daily allowance of vitamin C and it's impossible to have anything over 100%. "100% is all. You can't have more than 100%," he argued adamantly. I almost had to change the channel. Of course, she wasn't talking about vitamin C, she was talking about children raised by two parents compared to one, but you get the point. She said something had gone up by 300%. She could have said, "tripled". She could have said, "gone from 2 to 6", but 300% sounds drastic.

She says that a single mom would be a greater hero, in her eyes, and statistically speaking, to give her child up for adoption. Statistically speaking, children that are adopted as babies have a better life than children raised by single mothers.

Now, I tried to phrase that in a way that would infuriate the least amount of people. Since very few people read my blog and the majority of them are not stupid, I probably have a lesser chance of infuriating anyone anyway. However, if she had written that same statement, she would have written it in such a way that even the most calm among us might have had a small spike in our blood pressure level. It's quite ingenious.

I must work on it.

Antivirus and Windows 7

Microsoft recently released a beta of Windows 7. Some people (probably mostly McAfee sales) is upset that the new OS has changed enough that their antivirus virus doesn't work any more.

I'm not a big fan of antivirus companies. I rank them up there with life insurance companies. They are playing on people's fears and ignorances to sell product.

They try to force us to run Symantec where I work. I don't follow the rules. When you are writing time sensitive software, any extraneous crap messes with the timing. The antivirus softwares are the worst. Sometimes they degrade performance so badly that they are worse than the viruses they are protecting you from.

Here's how to easily protect yourself from viruses without purchasing and installing one of these viruses to protect you:
  1. Don't download anything from an unknown source (there are plenty of known sources who scan all the files they put up for download -- I use Snapfiles).
  2. If you absolutely positively have to download something, scan it before you install it. If you are running Windows Vista, it won't let the installation do anything fishy without asking you for permission (unless you know what you are doing and have disabled the security features). There are scanning programs that are "run as need". These don't even necessarily have to be installed. Just run them and tell them which file to scan.
  3. Put passwords on your computers for all users and don't share anything with full anonymous access. If you do share anything don't share anything that can be executed.
  4. If you are running Windows XP, upgrade to Vista. I've found that Vista is much better at enforcing a secure virus free environment. Of course, I've been using XP daily since its release and I've never had a virus. And by daily, I mean greater than 8 hours per day connected to the Internet, downloading stuff, getting emails, playing games, etc.

Remove Vocals from Audio

So my eldest daughter wanted me to take her Britney Spears CD and remove the vocals from the first two verses of Womanizer.

I thought this would be relatively painless. I've been to Karaoke places before where they take a CD and reduce the lead vocals so you can sing over it in a most unglamorous fashion.

It's not as easy as it sounds. I managed to butcher it a little bit and made something that I think is acceptable.

I found a little trial ware ditty called Gold Wave that had an "effect" option to reduce vocals. It basically lets you trim the track via frequency and amplitude to remove/reduce the vocals. It has some predefined settings to help you get started.

All in all, I was impressed with the product. If you ever want to remove vocals from some music, it's definitely a good place to start. Free for 15 days. If you want to purchase it's $45. I'm hoping they'll donate me one for free since I took the time out of my busy Saturday to post this message.

Alliterator Animal Sh*t List: The Letter 'E'

I think before I give you the alliteration for E, I should mention that words can be spelled oddly or invented as long as they get the "sound" or "meaning" across. It aids in the creativity. I'm not sure if I do this with the letter E. I'll have to type it out and see if the spell checker complains. I know I do it for the letter Q, but that's ways out. I'll probably have to reiterate my rules then. I also need to work on my vocabulary (for this as well as other things). I was being forced to watch 7th Heaven last night and they used a word that I had heard before but I had not idea what it meant. And now I can't remember what the word was. It started with an i.

And now for the E's:

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

I went and saw their performance in Dallas last Saturday. They put on a very good show. The first part of it is all happy and Christmassy. They tell a pretty Christmas story and all the old ladies get teary eyed. I like the music though. I could do without the happy stories. These guys are all really good musicians.

But, the story is what I'm here to talk about. These musicians are from diverse backgrounds. You've got the guitarist that started Testament. A most un-Christmassy type band. You've got guys that have played with Alice Cooper, Megadeth, and on and on. Guys that would have given Tipper Gore more nightmares than Dee Snider.

Back when I was a kid I went through the whole PMRC craze. According to Tipper Gore, the PMRC was formed to alert the public of "the growing trend in music towards lyrics that are sexually explicit, excessively violent, or glorify the use of drugs and alcohol." (Gore, Tipper 68)

She'd probably enjoy Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Heck, she probably does enjoy Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Most of Trans-Siberian's roots come from a band called Savatage. If I am not mistaken, the Savatage drummer, guitarist, singer, bassist and producer all play a roll in Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Don't get me wrong. These are all some of my favorite bands. I've been listening to Savatage ever since I heard Power of the Night the first time back in 1985 or so. I just think it's funny that all these guys have gone on to create a Christmas event that is hugely popular. I still don't like Tipper and I don't own a gun, glorify drugs or alcohol or play with myself in the shower.

People Hating People

Hello. I want you all to meet my Soap Box. I don’t let him out very often, but today I have decided to enjoy his comforting presence. May you all be comforted as well.

I’m tired of seeing and reading things about Muslims. I’m tired of reading and seeing things about Jews. I’m tired of reading and seeing things about “a people”, be they Americans, Russians, Germans, French, British, Arabs, Chinese, etc.

When did we start attributing one person’s madness to a people? How can you say, “I hate Muslims?” You can’t possibly know all the Muslims in the world. You get to see a small sampling of newsworthy Muslims, but I am quite sure that they in no way pertain to the majority. The majority are not newsworthy.

Anyway, hatred is bad. There are always two sides to every story.

What really gets under my skin is when we (as Americans) call people stupid idiots for using improper English. How many languages can most American’s speak? Most Americans have no right to call anyone from another country stupid.

The Gaza/Israel thing is my latest foray into all encompassing people hatred. I don’t know how many people I’ve spoken to have said that Israel should just wipe Gaza off the face of the earth. The strange thing is that we, in America, hear the Fox News version of the story. People in other parts of the world, hear a different version of the story.

We’ve been told that the Hamas have been firing rockets randomly at Israel for the last 8 years and now Israel is finally retaliating. I’m thinking this can’t be even close to the whole story. Other parts of the world see things rather differently.

I’m saying I don’t know. I know that if someone was throwing rocks at me for 8 years, I might end up blowing them up with plastic explosives and a jock strap, but that’s just me. The media would probably ignore the rock throwing. A scrape here, a scrape there. Who cares? It’s not newsworthy. But when I splattered their balls across two city blocks and struck some innocent bystanders with body parts, then the news would be all over that. As far as the media watching audience, I would be the aggressor. Is that what is happening here? I don’t know.

Why would the people in Gaza not want Israel to control the area? Israel seems to have more wealth. There doesn’t seem to be as much poverty. It seems to me that if I were living in Gaza I’d want a more stable wealthy government. How much would you be willing to give up to remove yourself from poverty? Gaza was controlled by Israel for 27 years, but they forced Israel out. If Israel is that good, then why force them out?

There must be more to the story. We have to carefully listen to both sides and see what’s wrong. We can’t hate one side or the other. Everyone in the world must be willing to walk in the other guy’s shoes. If you are not willing, then you are part of the problem.

Rib Injury

Today's news involves rib injury. I am pretty sure they are just bruised.

However, in my effort to serve society, I am here to spread this important announcement.

Your ribs are tender. Take care of them. If you tempted to risk rib injury, don't do it. Do something safer that doesn't involve possible rib risk.

Two days ago, I was attempting to move stereo components around on my small component rack. The receiver was a lot heavier than I reckoned and I fell over on the corner of the rack crushing my right side on the corner of the evil rack.

This maneuver immediately evoked a severe acute pain in my right side followed by a fit of rapid breathing and uncontrolled coughing.

Today I have a browning blue discoloration on the affected area. It is slightly uncomfortable to breathe. Sometimes, when I turn just right I am prodded with a painful reminder of my failure to properly care for my ribs. And that's not even hinting upon the excitement of sleeping soundly only to roll over onto the affected area.

I was trying to ask my wife the other day if it looked bad. She says she only gently touched the area. I thought she was trying to ram her finger through my ribcage to see if the other side of my lung was still intact.

Questions that Can't Be Answered or Have No Answer

I've been reading lately. I think I am going to do book reports as future blog fodder. But, until I have time to do a book report, I'll just let you know that one of the books I am reading is "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield. One of the major themes in the book is courage. However, he notes that courage is not the opposite of fear. So, what is the opposite of fear? He answers it later by saying the opposite of fear is love, but I think that's just the contextual opposite in that particular setting. You'd have to read the book. I don't think there is an opposite of fear.

My other puzzle that I've been trying to figure out is how do you remove power from wealth? Is it possible to separate the two? Can you have billions of dollars and not be powerful? I've decided it's not possible. No matter what scenario you come up with, money always equals power.

Mamma Mia! And Meryl Streep

If you've been following my blog, you realize I don't watch too much TV. I record Bones and House. I bought Mamma Mia! for my wife for Christmas. I bought it on Blu-Ray because I bought myself a blu-ray player. I've talked to a few people that hate the movie. I don't really know why. It's kind of goofy and you can't expect it to be an edge of your seat thriller, but it's good. It's made me a complete and total fan of Meryl Streep.

Of course, it made me less of a fan of Pierce Brosnan than I already was (not). He should probably give up singing.

This post is a tribute to my randomness. If you have the time to watch anything on youtube, you should watch Meryl Streep singing "Winner Takes it All". It gives me chills.

I had to modify the above video to find a full length version.

NBC Doesn't like the full length version. Something about copyrights. I'm changing the video again.

Alliterator Animal Sh*t List: The Letter 'D'
